Lately, all I see are the busy people walking, texting, and not paying attention to the world around them. Everyone seems to be on a mission to multitask every aspect of their lives. And I get that. We live in a world where people feel that being busy is the only way to show they are thriving in life. But why? There is a power to being present in the moment.

I will be the first to admit that I tried to do it all and constantly needed to be plugged in. I would have my phone on me at all times, ready to check an email or respond to a text. And then I had two aha moments that made me stop and re-evaluate how I was spending my time.

The first was at a gathering. It was a holiday celebration, and most people had not seen each other in a while. But after the initial hellos and snacking, the conversation seemed to lull. I looked around, and most of the people there were on their phones. They were either scrolling through social media, playing a game, or texting someone who wasn’t there. It hit me. When did being present and talking become a thing we didn’t do? The second hit-me-over-the-head moment was when I saw not one, but four separate people walking their dogs in my neighborhood while being on their phones. Not one of them looked up or was even watching their dogs. They just kept their heads down and eyes glued to the screen in front of them. Why? Are you so important that you can’t take fifteen minutes to breathe, recharge, and actually enjoy the time you are spending outside?

This all started me thinking about how many times a day I try to juggle multiple tasks and exactly how much time I spend looking at my damn phone. Let me tell you, it was too much. Even in my downtime, it happened. I would be watching a TV show and miss a part because I was checking an email. Did I need to check that email at that exact second? The answer may shock no one. I didn’t. And yet…I still felt that pull.

Enough. I had to stop. So, I set out to make a plan. It was hard, and I still have the desire to doom scroll while watching TV or lying in bed, but I am making progress. I never walk my dog while on my phone. She enjoys the walk more, and to be honest, I do too. Our outside time recharges me and allows me to bring more focus to my work. I have learned to put my phone on a shelf, in my bag, or in another room when I am with other people. Imagine this…I talk to the people around me. I know. It is groundbreaking, right? I have even managed to put my phone to the side while I watch TV. I sit and watch a movie or binge a TV show. I am in it with no distractions, experiencing everything. It is so much better.

And here is the one that I think changed a lot for me. The way I read. It wasn’t something I thought I needed to change, but I did. Remembering the time I spent reading when I was younger triggered a need to switch around what I was doing and how I was doing it. Now, when I am reading, my phone isn’t near me. No devices except my tablet if I’m reading an eBook. However, if I am on my tablet, ALL notices and alerts are turned off. It is me, sometimes my dog, a cup of coffee, and my book. I can engage like when I was younger. I enter the worlds created by authors and allow myself to get lost. It is wonderful, and as cheesy as it sounds, reading has become magical again for me. I regained the spark I used to have.

So, if you are all like me, take the time to re-evaluate your time. Can you unplug? Can you step back from the multi-tasking and really be present? I did, and my life is much richer for it.

Honestly, I am in heaven. Not only is the Agatha Christie world expanding, but it is with my favorite character that the author has written. Though I love Poirot, there is something that makes Miss Marple more my speed. As a bonus, the book is written by Lucy Foley. She is a fabulous mystery writer, and I have a feeling she is going to do an amazing job.

When I first started blogging, I read a tremendous amount of romance. I mean…a lot of romance and in a lot of sub-genres. It was the height of FIFTY SHADES OF GREY, and romance authors were self-publishing and getting huge deals from the major publishers. Everything seemed to center on these books, so I decided to give romance a chance.

For a while, I loved it. They were generally quick reads, and I started to get into certain tropes. But then, I started to tire of similar stories showing up over and over again. I wanted something more. I wanted intrigue, diversity of the narrative, and anything besides just a romantic storyline. So I stopped reading romance. Well, that isn’t entirely true. I would still circle back to a few authors that I have come to truly love for their diversity in their writing and character development. But I decided that if were going to sit down with a book, it had to grab me in ways that the romance books I was seeing weren’t.

Flash forward. I have been in a wonderful world filled with murder, classic stories, fantasy, and historical settings. I have traveled through time. I have solved cases with amateur sleuths and detectives alike. And then something happened. I started to see a romance or two that I wanted to read. My gut was telling me to give them a chance, but my brain wasn’t sure. So, I listened to my gut. You know what? I liked the book I chose. After years of abstaining, I was ready to dip my toe in the romance pool again. Would it be my primary genre? No. I don’t do that anymore. But what I will do is give interesting plots and a mixing of love stories, combined with crime-solving or the supernatural, a chance.

So if you are all like me and don’t want to go all in on romance, but are willing to diversify your reading, this Valentine’s Day, I have some romances that push past the tropes and pull you into the lives of the characters at the center of the story.

If confession is good for the soul, why does writing what you honestly feel seem taboo? Most of the time, I hold back what I am really thinking online because it is brutal out there. I see what others go through and wonder if it is all worth it.

With all that said, this year, I have vowed to write more. Articles, books, Post-It notes. Whatever! All I want is to put my ideas out there and see what happens. There may be crickets, or maybe I will connect with others like me. But no matter what, I am doing this for me and expecting nothing from anyone other than myself.

Now, you may be wondering why I am developing this space after over a year of sitting with it. The answer is simple. I have entered into my attention-seeking chick era. Kidding!

No. Seriously. I have been working on this for a while. I have started and stopped Art, Books, & Coffee resurgence a million times. After the initial success in 2016, I struggled with what I wanted to post and got caught up in letting the trends dictate what I would post and read. I looked to others and compared myself to them. Essentially, I went down the spiral of doubt. I didn’t have as many followers as others in the bookstagram world. My first book didn’t turn out the way I wanted it to (but that is a whole different story of giving in to pressure from a PR company that didn’t wind up actually helping my book sales). That is over.

It is time to regain my voice. I am reading what I want. Enjoying the art I love. Drinking that extra glass of wine or pot of coffee. And now, I hope to share that all with you. This will be a positive space. I plan on sharing tons of books, some of my interests outside the book world, and my background in art. Not to mention all the thoughts I have about growing older in the graphic design world, the crazy musings, and questions I would like to share with the world.

So…here we go!

THE ORNITHOLOGIST'S FIELD GUIDE TO LOVE is a whimsically academic romance packed with swoon-worthy moments, witty banter, and a race to become Birder of the Year. Holton’s writing is wonderfully engaging and effortlessly transports her readers into this world.

Oh, how I enjoyed spending time on this wildly amusing and fantastical journey to find the endangered caladrius bird. The smart, capable, and ambitious Beth and the rakishly charming and equally intelligent Devon make a perfect pair. It is captivating how their relationship develops throughout the story. From the cheeky comments to the palpable attraction to honest moments, I loved it all! And then, let us not forget the amazingly diverting side characters who bumble in and out as they try for their shot at Birder of the Year.

THE ORNITHOLOGIST'S FIELD GUIDE TO LOVE is now the fourth book I have read by this author, and they keep getting better. The historical aspects work perfectly with the hint of fantasy as the characters navigate the competition in this tale. I cannot wait to see what Holton is going to map out next in book two of the series. {pun intended}

Audiobook Note: Elizabeth Knowelden brilliantly narrates Holton’s story. Her diction and pace bring to life the characters. Every moment spent listening to this audiobook was pure entertainment.

THE HOLLYWOOD ASSISTANT is a juicy psychological thriller that will pull you in with the glitz and glam, but keep you greedily reading with the duplicity, secrets, and salacious antics. Cobb brings to life her characters as she throws them down the rabbit hole of her making.

From beginning to end, this story was one wild ride. Cassidy is a completely relatable woman. But then, things shift in her relationship with her employer, Nate. Does she spiral out or is she being played? This is the question I kept asking myself until the very end. The layers of deceit compound as does the tension between all those intertwined in this thriller. The push and pull between what is real and what is for show makes this so good! And not one person you will meet within these pages is exactly what they seem.

Let’s face it. Cobb knows how to craft a down-right addictive read. Her ability to delve into the psyche of her characters and play around with their insecurities, struggles, and compulsions is top-notch. THE HOLLYWOOD ASSISTANT is a scintillating read that calls into question who we surround ourselves with. Honestly, it was such an entertaining book. Though, did I expect anything else from the author of THE HUNTING WIVES?

WHEN WE WERE SILENT is a tense, emotional, and suspenseful read. McPhillips expertly constructed a story filled with twists, turns, and secrets bubbling to the surface. Each element of the plot and all the characters met within these pages worked hand in hand to deliver an addictively thrilling and dynamic book.

In a story like this, there has to be reverence for the subject matter. The author should develop the characters and move the narrative forward through honesty while honoring all emotions that can be experienced. And, McPhillips did this perfectly. She created a thriller centering around abuse and murder in a way that did not exploit the topic. It didn’t shy away from any aspect. The author brought the reader into Louise’s past and present with eloquence and candor. It was quite a touching and compelling read.

WHEN WE WERE SILENT is one of those books that stays with you. Reading Louise’s experience brought to mind all those accounts we don’t hear about. The ones that were silent or silenced. There is power in telling this type of story and I am certainly glad I was able to read it.

I have a love/ hate relationship with author Jay Kristoff. On one hand, he is an extremely talented writer who builds these fabulously dark and twisted worlds. I have been able to get some of the best smart-ass retorts from both Nevernight and Empire of the Vampire series. But then there is the simple fact that these tales will wreck you. And when I say this, I mean it. The ups and downs. The throw you against the wall and gasp for air moments. The deaths of beloved characters. They are all there. But then again, the right book is worth a hundred blades. No?

So the question remains. Why do I keep coming back for more heartache and flagrant disregard for his fans’ feelings? Because the books are that good. And damn him for that! It would be easy to turn away if he didn’t cause me to invest in these brilliantly flawed and snarky characters. And you know what…there ARE f*cks to give for fashion! And Kristoff gets that.

Now, before you start thinking I am insane…which I very well might be. I know what any rational person would say. These are just books. But let me remind you one thing. There is no just when talking about books. I am a reader—an avid reader looking for stories to pull me in and allow me to escape. These do that and maybe I am a glutton for punishment, but I will keep coming back for more as long as Kristoff keeps stringing words into sentences, sentences into paragraphs, and paragraphs into books which will require me to mentally prepare to read.

Book Review:

Oh, what delicious fresh hell author Jay Kristoff sends his readers into with this second book in the Empire of the Vampire series. The author continues the saga of Gabriel de León and Dior in EMPIRE OF THE DAMNED and it has no right to be this good.

The author creates a world that his readers can inhabit as they get to know the characters within this tale. And what personalities he has created. Each has a unique personality, but all have layers to them allowing the reader to invest in what is happening. The action, manipulation, duplicity, and slight smuttiness all come together in one fabulously dark and twisted tale.

When I tell people to read one of Jay Kristoff’s books, I rarely tell them what he does to his readers. The rollercoaster ride you are sent down is entertaining, thrilling, and emotional. But it is always worth it. Personally, I do believe he enjoys making us all cry out “Why?!?!” when certain scenes are met.

EMPIRE OF THE DAMNED built upon the foundation in book one in a way that pulls the reader further down the rabbit hole in the best way possible. I adore this series for the witty one-liners, the brilliantly conceived world I enter into, and the impeccably absorbing writing. I cannot wait for book three.

My Highly Caffeinated Thought: The beginning of a bloody epic tale that will give you everything you want from a gritty, dark, and action-filled fantasy novel.

THE EMPIRE OF THE VAMPIRE is the vampire book you have never thought you needed in your life. Kristoff does it again with an amazingly dark, bloody, twisted tale of pain, loss, revenge, love, and friendship. The writing is nothing short of brilliantly constructed to beat the crap out of you as become immersed in the world created by the author. 

Here is the thing. I will not sit here and retell the story of Gabriel de León. Read the damn book for yourself. It is well worth the time and quite frankly if you don’t, you are missing out. What I will say is that this book takes the best of gothic vampire tradition and makes it fresh, compelling, and bloody addictive. The characters have grit, heart, and wit. The lore and history built within these pages is a complex web setting the stage for what is to come. Then, if that wasn’t enough, there are illustrations added throughout the book that make the experience of reading even better. 

Seriously, this book is a must-read. Though I will warn you, it may leave you hating and loving the author at the same time. Kristoff has the remarkable ability to craft a story that will tear your heart out, but still, have you coming back for more. The next book cannot come soon enough.

Gardner laughed when Hart said "Mr. Barrett" and his boss gave him another nasty look-but it was still as nasty as a man with feathered hair and a gray-checked suit could muster. Gardner laughed a few more times before saying, "This is a joke. Are we really supposed to call this guy Barrett?”

"That's his operational name, Frank.”

"Not his real name. This guy can't even play straight with us, the people he fuckin' works for?”

I turned to Gardner with what I hoped was a look of great weariness upon my face. People in my line of work don't have a lot of fans. I get called in when cases have stalled or are about to go bust. The agents already working those cases don't usually like the help. I've almost come to expect a bit of hostility, and I'm not above responding in kind.

"I don't work for you," I said to Gardner. "It was your boss who put in a request with the Detroit police. That's who I work for. "Debate away. I don't need to be here."

"I'm glad you are. I'll make sure Frank plays nice, don't worry about that. I'm the boss, just like you said. Frank, explain it to him."

I was startled. Hart couldn't pull off the look, but his voice dropped about an octave when he said Frank, explain it to him and there was some sand and grit to it suddenly, something menacing and surprisingly competent. Gardner still gave his head a slow shake-the recalcitrant puppy being brought to heel-but eventually he got around to telling me why Hart put in the request, and why I was in Seattle.

"We need corroborating evidence that the Danbys were the ones who robbed that bank," he began. "Our lawyers don't think the security tape will be enough. They think that without corroborating evidence the tape would be ruled inadmissible at trial. Because of the ongoing investigation into the Danbys that is being conducted by this office, the robbery case has been transferred from San Francisco to Seattle and is the reason we have requested your services, Mr. Barrett."

It took him ten more minutes to explain the FBI's plan. He must have used six or seven sneers in the telling, saving the biggest for his close, which he probably had rehearsed in his mind, and went like this, said without pause or hesitation: "So that's pretty much it-we need you to go to Cape Rage and get hired by the Danbys; we need you to get over to Danby Island and find evidence that will link the Danbys to the bank robbery in San Francisco; if you get on that island, by the way, you'll be the first cop to ever see it, and congratulations to you; once you're on the island and have secured the corroborating evidence we need you to get that intel to the operation commander-that will be me-then we need you to be ready and prepared to assist the operational commander in any way he deems necessary when we come over to that island and shut the motherfuckers down."

The last words came out in a rush, the syllables smashing into each other like boxcars in a train wreck, and when he was done, Gardner laughed, and sneered, and asked, "What do you say, Barrett? Want the job?"

Maybe it was the laugh. Maybe it was not wanting to give a sneer-freak the last sneer. I've thought about it a thousand times and I'm not sure why I didn't take more time with my answer that morning; why I didn't take another look at that mean, restless sky outside Hart's window and ask myself what sort of story comes with a sky like that?

Instead, I looked at Gardner, shrugged my shoulders and asked, "Is that all?"

That is one beginning for this story. There is another: three days earlier, when Henry Carter awakes on a patch of fern moss and finds himself staring at high cirrus clouds. He hears the one-note trilling of a cardinal. The spinning of car wheels. Feels the moss beneath him turn warm and wet, as he bleeds out.

In time, the cardinal flies away, the car wheels fade, and after that comes a great silence, a muteness broad and deep enough for him to tumble into. He spins in the silence a long time, what seems like days, until a foul smell comes over him and he reawakens.

He rolled when he was shot, and he is grateful he isn't face down. He lifts his head and sees blood pooling around his waist. It is starting to discolor. The reason for the smell. He lays his head down and goes back to watching clouds.

He doesn't spend time thinking about the betrayal. Not right away. It happened. He should have seen it coming. He doesn't allow more than that, not until the last minutes before he loses consciousness a second time, when he remembers her face.

The way she looked when he saw her last. Surprised. But not as surprised as she should have been. Questioning. But not in a good way. Wondering whether she should run. Whether that was the smart play and whether she had the time for it.

He knew the look.

When he reawakens, the air has chilled and there are black dots in front of the clouds, as though they have mottled. He wonders what would cause a thing like that, but no answer comes to him.

His father had an expression for her. He remembers that. "Tess Danby ain't no hand-upper, son." When he asked his father what that meant, he'd answered, "Means that gal is a great many things, Henry, but one thing she'll never be is any help to a man when he's down."

Funny. Is that funny now?

He ponders the question for the rest of the day, until the wind gathers strength and the late-afternoon gnats come and then are blown away; until the shadows climb down from the upper branches of the trees and begin to lie for the night; until the last of the day's light fades, glimmer by glimmer, from the forest floor. Just before the world goes dark, Henry Carter decides the question doesn't matter much-Tess Danby isn't there now-and it would be right and proper, an action befitting the facts, to kill his wife if he ever has the chance.

THE PAINTER’S DAUGHTERS showcases the life of Peggy and Molly Gainsborough in a way that is both heartfelt and candid. Howes’ beautifully written prose highlights the ups and downs that these sisters experienced throughout their years, in addition to flashing back to their mother’s early years.

What pulled me into this book is the simple premise that I have seen the paintings by Thomas Gainsborough of his family. Many times, when standing in front of a portrait, my mind wanders to what the lives of those depicted were like. I tell myself the facts I know, but there are moments when I let my imagination run a little wild. This fictional storytelling is the kinship I feel with Howes. She effortlessly conceived a narrative about the Gainsborough family that is believable and captivating. It is apparent the author did her research through the historical elements while still developing a world of her own.

THE PAINTER’S DAUGHTERS brings to life the girls captured on canvas through their love, pain, and strife. Howes wrote a tale that emphasizes that the bonds of sisterhood can go far past madness and perceived betrayal. Every moment spent with Peggy and Molly felt honest and I truly loved getting to know them.

The Silence in Her Eyes by Armando Lucas Correa

THE SILENCE IN HER EYES is a tense and layered thriller. Correa shines with his character of Leah. She is a complex, unique, and flawed woman that propels the story forward.

From the beginning to the end, the author keeps the reader on their toes. The duplicity, misdirections, and constant readjusting of Leah’s reality allow the suspense to build. Then you have the ever-present looming fear of what will happen next. Is what Leah perceives the truth? Can the reader trust her? Or is there something more deceitful happening around her? These are all the questions that compounded in my head as I read this book. In the end, all were answered in a fabulous way.

THE SILENCE IN HER EYES pushes the boundaries of what one woman can take in her life. It pulls together all the various events and interactions to form a picture only to tear it apart. The author truly developed a psychological suspense that pulled you in and didn’t let go until the very end.

The Mysterious Case of the Alperton Angels by Janice Hallett
Rating: ☕☕☕☕

THE MYSTERIOUS CASE OF THE ALPERTON ANGELS is a fictional true-crime investigation with an ending I am still reeling over. With her unique style, Hallett compiles various formats of our character's research to carefully construct a multilayered mystery.

There was something about this story. It is downright addictive. When I wasn’t reading the book, I was thinking about it. Personally, I believe it is the blend of exploration into the Alperton Angels cult, the relationships Amanda has, and the realness Amanda Bailey’s character brings to it all. I wasn’t sure how it would all come together, but it did. The mystery of what happened is revealed one fact at a time. Reading Amanda’s emails, interviews, and messages, allows the reader to feel as if you are right there. What she learns, we learn. And yet, there is also the distinctively personal side of our true crime writer seeping into the narrative. All bringing it to an entertaining and surprising ending.

THE MYSTERIOUS CASE OF THE ALPERTON ANGELS takes the best of what we all love about true crime, the investigation, and still manages to showcase intriguing, flawed, and honest characters throughout. With this book, Hallett has converted me into a fan.

Reader’s Note: I will be honest. I have tried and failed to read one of this author’s books before. I don’t know if it was the timing or if I wasn’t ready to read a book with this type of formatting, but I didn’t finish. And yet, when I got this book in the mail, something told me to keep going. And boy am I glad I did. I loved it so much that I am going to go back and try to read Hallett’s other books.

The Fury by Alex Michaelides
Rating: ☕☕☕☕

THE FURY is a wonderful retelling of a murder plot with all the drama of Greek Tragedy. Michaelides continues to gift his readers complex and flawed characters as they navigate the murky waters of life, love, and death.

The author weaves together a tale of deception, lies, and obsession through the eyes of Elliot Chase, the author of this fictional account of a scheme fit for any stage. With every twist and turn, I could imagine Elliot sitting down and deciding how to present the events of the island on that weekend. There is an unreliable nature to him that adds to the intrigue. As a reader, I never quite knew if what he was saying would be true because duplicity seemed like second nature to him. But by the end, all things are revealed.

This book is such a juicy, bingeable read. It will pull you in from the opening chapter and have you furiously flipping through the pages to find out what is going to happen next. Michaelides delivers another wildly entertaining book.

Audiobook Note: Narrator Alex Jennings gave a perfectly theatrical performance for this book. The pace was spot on, and the flow was effortless. I loved the way he brought Elliot to life. Even when I wasn’t listening to the book and sat with the physical book, it was Jennings I would imagine Elliot sounding like in my head.

Meet the Benedettos by Katie Cotugno
Rating: ☕☕☕

MEET THE BENEDETTOS takes the idea of today's version of celebrity and weaves it into the narrative of PRIDE AND PREJUDICE. Cotugno manages to give her characters different identities while still having the familiar qualities we have all come to love in Austen’s classic.

Bottom line...this was a fun book. It is a one-sitting read that centers around the Benedettos sisters. They are reality TV stars gone by the wayside. The personalities are a bit like caricatures, but that worked for the overall narrative. The one person who came through as the most real was Lilly. She made this book for me. I enjoyed the character more than the others because her actions and emotions were honest.

MEET THE BENEDETTOS is prime to hit the screen, big or small, and reads like that. I would have loved a little more depth to the sisters as they navigate the situations within the book. And yet, it was entertaining and a fresh take on a classic.

The General and Julia by Jon Clinch
Rating: ☕☕☕

THE GENERAL AND JULIA is a look at the life of Ulysses S. Grant through a more personal lens. Clinch’s eloquence and ability to delve into this time in history made this book flow effortlessly through Grant’s life. It was a true gift to be able to read the events I have studied in school with a new perspective even if they were a fictional retelling. The only thing I was hoping to have more of was Julia. Though her presence was always there, it might have given the story more heart if she was front and center in a few more places within the narrative.

For anyone who loves historical fiction and/or books about American history, this one is for you.

THE MALEVOLENT SEVEN is dark, gritty, and packed with all sorts of supernatural goodness. Sebastien de Castell carefully crafted a world with layers of lore, various magics, and memorable characters so the reader will be instantly drawn into the quest these seven take on.

Here is the thing. There are a lot of elements that make this book so good. The characters are honest and well-developed. The landscape is perfectly set with unique intricate details. The levels of magic and different types of beings encountered, not only within the seven but also those they have to fight and make deals with, are explained through actions as well as Cade’s comments. And finally, the story doesn’t take itself too seriously. There are brilliantly funny moments to lighten up a very tense and serious mission. All in all, de Castell nailed it. 

From the opening chapter until the very end, this book has everything a fantasy reader could want. It will have you rooting for the bad guys and wondering what could come next for this group.

Allie realized she should never have agreed to this trip. Once Cam and Madison backed out on their deal and showed up with the Wonder Twins in tow, she should have said she felt sick, had to study for a test, anything to stay back in the dorm for the weekend. Cam and Madison had yelled from the backseat, and Allie had swallowed her annoyance and climbed in, crammed in the middle seat because “you’re the smallest, and legroom doesn’t matter for you.”

Cam and Madison had whooped and shouted, slapping a paper “Birthday Girl” crown on her head and dropping a package of Hostess Cupcakes in her lap.

“Let’s get this twenty-first birthday party started!” Cam had shouted, her arm around Allie’s shoulders.

Allie had smiled, the way she was supposed to, but she didn’t miss the look Brad had given her in the mirror. Something sneaky, something snakey, something that didn’t bode well at all for the weekend.

They’d driven away from the campus, and almost immediately Steve had handed a thermos to Madison, shaking it meaningfully.

“A little juice for the party,” he’d said.

Madison had immediately opened it and guzzled a bunch, and then passed it to Allie, who didn’t want to drink alcohol at ten in the morning, and especially did not want to drink some mystery cocktail prepared by Steve. But everyone had been watching her and waiting, so she’d taken a sip and made herself not wrinkle her nose because whatever was in there tasted like gasoline. Cam had shouted, “Yeah, girl!” and grabbed the thermos, downing a fair amount herself.

They’d passed the bottle back and forth, Allie taking only small sips, but Cam and Madison hadn’t seemed to notice. Despite limiting her intake, Allie had still dropped off to sleep in the back- seat, only waking when they had pulled up in front of the cabin.

“Where the hell are we?” she’d asked, sitting up straight. Cam and Madison were out cold on either side of her. Whatever Steve had put in that bottle had packed a punch. “This is not the beach.” “‘This is not the beach,’” Brad had said, his voice high and mocking. “I see why your GPA is so high. Nothing gets by you, Brockman.”

Cam had stirred beside her, then sat up and looked out the window. “Are we there yet?”

“Well, we’re somewhere,” Allie had said, trying to draw on her patience. She’d had no idea where Brad had driven them, and since he was the only one in the vicinity with a car, she needed to convince him to stop fucking around and take them to the cottage.

“Is this the woods?” Cam had said. “A cabin in the woods?”

“Just like the movie!” Madison had squealed, jumping out and slamming the door behind her. Steve had followed, chasing her around the clearing in front of the cabin’s porch.

“Everyone died in that movie,” Allie had muttered. “Like, actually everyone.”

October was an epic reading month for me. I continued to dive into new fantasy novels, a witchy romance, a 5-star classic retelling, and two mysteries. The added bonus was I also started my month with V.E. Schwab. I loved the first book in the Threads of Power series almost as much as the Shades of Magic series. Oh, who am I kidding...I was obsessed with THE FRAGILE THREADS OF POWER. Cannot wait to see what comes next.

Also, SHIELD MAIDEN by Sharon Emmerichs was a brilliant book. It is an epically action-packed and completely engrossing tale of mythological battles, greedy power grabs, friendship, and love. Emmerichs breathes new life into the classic BEOWULF while still managing to honor the original tale.

THE HURRICANE WARS by Thea Guanzon
Rating: ☕☕☕☕ + 1/2

THE HURRICANE WARS is a brilliantly conceived tale set in a fantastical world infused with magic, passion, politics, and very real-to-life struggles. Guanzon effortlessly weaves together all of the elements surrounding her characters with engaging and addictive prose.

As with any first book in a series, there was a lot of world-building, character introductions, and laying the stage for what is to come. However, it was done in a way that remained entertaining as well as informative. The careful construction of the various levels of magic and how it is developing in Talasyn and Alaric makes it all feel very real. This plays well off of the motives of certain characters, power plays, and hidden agendas throughout these pages. Everything melds together with the development of the characters through the various interactions and conversations. Simply perfection. There are big personalities in this book, and I am here for it. And then you have Talasyn and Alaric. The enemies-to-lovers angle is wonderfully coming to life, though I anticipate many more scenes with these two as they heat up the page only to shut it all down.

If it seems that I am gushing about this book, it is because I am. The writing was masterful. The storytelling was downright compelling. The pace was perfect as the tension slowly built. Guanzon has gifted her readers with a novel balancing action, fantasy, and romance. I didn’t know if I was a fan of Romantasy, but I do now. When an author does it this well, I love it! I cannot wait for what comes next for Talasyn and Alaric. It is going to be epic!

FRAGILE THREADS OF POWER by V.E. Schwab
Threads of Power, Book 1
Rating: ☕☕☕☕

In the first book in the Threads of Power series, Schwab brings us back into the world created in the Shades of Magic trilogy. FRAGILE THREADS OF POWER is filled with magic, mayhem, and compelling characters.

What is so amazing about this book is that as much as it is an extension of the previous series, there is a freshness to Schwab’s carefully crafted fantastical universe. The new characters have uniquely diverse relationships and backgrounds to engage the reader. Honestly, Tes is my personal favorite. There is something about her perspective and personal history that pulled me in. Her journey is just beginning, and I am hooked. Oh. Fear not all those who loved the previous books. The author does incorporate Kell and Lila within this story. Their place in this book is simply perfection.

This tale is the perfect mix of fantasy, suspense, and fabulously quirky wit. Schwab's writing is eloquent and is at just the right pace for the complexity of the tale. The reader can relish in the history and levels of magic/powers within this world while still being entertained by all the events unfolding. The expansion of the stories of those we came to know and the interjection of something different allows the reader to enjoy FRAGILE THREADS OF POWER as a whole new experience.

PSA: Though I highly recommend reading the Shades of Magic trilogy, you don’t necessarily have to read it to enjoy this book. There is enough for this book to stand on its own as the beginning of the Threads of Power series.

SHIELD MAIDEN by Sharon Emmerichs
Rating: ☕☕☕☕☕

SHIELD MAIDEN is an epically action-packed and completely engrossing tale of mythological battles, greedy power grabs, friendship, and love. Emmerichs breathes new life into the classic BEOWULF while still managing to honor the original tale.

What is so great about this particular retelling is the way the author carefully crafted this story by using Fryda as the catalyst to propel the reader down a path filled with pain, tumultuous situations, and self-realization. The writing effortlessly flows from tender moments to high-action battles, all the while giving the characters the ability to grow and learn. There wasn’t a moment spent within these pages that didn’t make this reader feel like she was in the thick of it with Fryda, Beowulf, Theow, Hild, and the rest. This is what good historical fiction should be. It should transport you back in time to a place where dragons do exist while still identifying with contemporary themes.

Honestly, SHIELD MAIDEN is one of the best re-tellings I have read in a while. Emmerichs just landed herself a spot next to Jennifer Saint, Madeline Miller, and Natalie Haynes on my shelf. I cannot wait to read what she gives us next.

MOTHER-DAUGHTER MURDER NIGHT by Nina Simon
Rating: ☕☕☕☕

MOTHER-DAUGHTER MURDER NIGHT was a wildly entertaining mystery featuring three generations of amateur sleuths. Simon delivered a story filled with real family issues, hidden secrets, and an intriguing murder investigation.

The bottom line is the Rubicon women make this book. The author wove a narrative together that allows Beth, Lana, and Jack to come alive and jump off the page. Lana is simply perfection with her over-the-top bravado and carefully guarded heart. Beth is the everywoman in the book. Her struggles, choices, and interactions with her daughter and mother are relatable. And then you have Jack. She is fifteen going on twenty-five with her intensity geared towards her passions and opinions. However, there is still something so fresh and youthful about her when she is with her family.

These personalities, mixed with the mysterious circumstances surrounding a dead body found by our youngest sleuth are pure gold. What better way to mend a fractured family than having them solve a mystery? The tension built through each clue discovered allows the reader to follow along with these women. You truly feel like you are right there with them. This investigation is fast-paced and completely pulls you in. Just when you think you know who the perpetrator is, there is a new twist or reveal culminating in a fabulous edge-of-your-seat ending.

WITCH OF WILD THINGS by Raquel Vasquez Gilliland
Rating: ☕☕☕☕

WITCH OF WILD THINGS is an enchanting story of love and family bonds with a hint of whimsy. Vasquez Gilliland effortlessly brought together a narrative containing the struggles of coping with loss, the emotions of past hurt, and the possibilities of a happier future.

This book was a surprise for me. It was a quick read with all the feels and a positively charming story. The way the author wove in the powers of the Flores women was perfectly done. There was never anything that seemed out of place. It all made sense within the family history as well as who these women are when we meet things in the present. Then you have Sage. I loved the whole development of this character. She popped off the page with her honesty and how her interactions were with all those around her.

All in all, this was a delightful read. It wasn’t dark or twisty. It was real and at times magical. Vasquez Gilliland truly wrote a tale for romance lovers and those who like a little touch of the supernatural.

BLESSING OF THE LOST GIRLS by J.A. Jance
Rating: ☕☕☕☕

BLESSING OF THE LOST GIRLS is a tense serial killer thriller with heart. Jance manages to give her readers a police procedural infused with emotion and honest moments between the characters. This combination makes for a story that is not only intriguing but also feels real to life.

Having never read any of the books in the Walker Family or Joanna Brady series, I wasn’t sure if I would be lost. However, I was pleasantly surprised at how easily I fell into step with the characters throughout the investigation. The way the author presents Joanna and Dan is both familiar as well as informative. As a new reader, I have enough background to keep me invested as well as learning about the other relationships within these worlds. This is especially true with Joanna’s daughter, Jennifer. It felt like there was a great balance between her starting her journey into law enforcement and her mother and Dan’s seasoned status in their respective agencies.

The one item I loved about this book was the insertion of the Native American tales. Though it may not seem to relate to the murder investigation, there is a thread that was very impactful. It directly brought into play the heritage of Dan, his wife, and Chair Man as well as the victim Rosa.

All in all, this was an amazing hard-boiled detective mystery with a serial killer you are hoping against hope gets caught before he strikes yet again. Jance’s writing has that fast-paced movement you want with just enough pauses in the right places. I can honestly say I will be reading more from this author even if I am a little late to the party.

FORGED BY BLOOD (Tainted Blood Duology, #1) by Ehigbor Okosun
Rating: ☕☕☕ + 1/2

FORGED BY BLOOD is a complex and carefully crafted fantasy filled with action, rich lore, and emotion. Okosun shines with the eloquence of her prose as the reader begins to understand the world they are entering.

What I loved about this particular book is the multiple layers to the story. At the core, it is about a young girl’s struggles and quest to fight for what is right. However, there are also political power plays, discrimination, enslavement, complicated relationships, and a whole system of blood magic. All of these on their own would be compelling, but together, they form a vivid and well-crafted tale.

Because this is the first book in a duology, I understand that there is a lot of background needed to set up the players and build the world. And yet, as the reader, there were I wanted more lore and more about the magic. You see it in action, but questions were lingering about all the facets which made things murky at times.

FORGED BY BLOOD is a solid beginning to what could possibly be an epic second book. Okosun’s voice is strong with a wonderful balance of heart and action. I am looking forward to seeing what comes in the next book.

This month was filled with authors I have loved for years, others I have heard of but never read, and newbies to my to-read list. Though all the books I read were good this month, there are a few standouts. The first is Karin Slaughter's latest installment of the Will Trent series. It brings us back into the GBI with Will Trent and crew for another suspenseful and intense case. Then, I went back to the only Hester Fox novel I hadn't read. This one weaves another beautifully atmospheric tale perfect for all those who love historical novels and those with a bit of magic in their hearts. Finally, there is Jackie Collins. Why did no one ever tell me Jackie Collin's classic had a serial killer in it?!?! This book is fun, salacious, and has just the right amount of dark twists.

After That Night: A Will Trent Thriller by Karin Slaughter
Rating: ☕☕☕☕☕

AFTER THAT NIGHT is an intense, dark, and deeply affecting story. Slaughter has a true gift for showing her readers all sides of a situation. She delves into the grit and underbelly of society while still allowing hope and moments of happiness to permeate the narrative.

For the eleventh time, I have entered back into the world of Will Trent and the GBI. Each time, I learn more about the characters as they tackle their latest investigation. This time around, it was personal. They were dealing with Sara’s past and trying to find a link between her case and two others.

It must be said that there are topics and incidents within this book that will make a reader uncomfortable and possibly could trigger some. Any time a writer deals with sexual assault, I ask myself why am I reading it. Many times, I stop reading. It can be too much or not feel right. However, for the authors that give the victims justice and a voice, I continue as I did with this one. The way Slaughter deals with the crimes committed is done with brutal honesty as well as reverence. There is a respect for the victims that comes through. For this, I applaud the author.

AFTER THAT NIGHT was an all-consuming read for me. The way the author unraveled the mystery and allowed the investigation to progress kept me on the edge of my seat. Slaughter continues to prove why she is simply the best at merging suspense, heart, and witty quips thrown in on the side.

Hollywood Wives (The Hollywood Series) by Jackie Collins
Rating: ☕☕☕☕

If I am being honest, this is the first book I have ever read by Collins. Sure, I heard about her fabulous salacious and sexy books, but for some reason, I never picked one up. Let me tell you, I was missing out on one wild ride.

HOLLYWOOD WIVES is the best of many worlds. It has a serial killer on the loose, a love story, more sexy moments than can be counted, and all the juicy backstabbing and back-door dealings of Tinseltown. Collins effortlessly crafts a story pulling the reader into a world few get to experience.

With all of the hype about the sex and lavish lifestyles of the characters, it can be hard to miss how powerful and impactful the author’s book is. She gives these women the chance to grow into strong, formidable characters. There is a thread of feminism and empowerment that looks different for Montana, Elaine, Angel, Sadie, Marlee, Pamela, Bibi, and the others who grace these pages.

HOLLYWOOD WIVES was entertaining, fast-paced, super sexy, and completely addictive. I don’t know what I thought this book would be, but it was better than I imagined.

Just Another Missing Person by Gillian McAllister
Rating: ☕☕☕☕

JUST ANOTHER MISSING PERSON is a fast-paced, suspenseful novel combining a traditional police procedural with a deeply personal domestic thriller narrative. McAllister has a gift for giving her readers fabulously addictive stories with relatable, flawed characters.

This book was enjoyable because of all the build-up and carefully placed reveals. When you start reading, there is a clear narrative that seems straightforward. You have a missing girl and an investigator blackmailed with her secret. Then, you really get into it. The twists, turns, and shocking moments will keep anyone on their toes. While reading, I was sure I had it all figured out. Next thing I know…Boom…I am back to square one, piecing together the mystery from a different perspective.

McAllister leveled up with this book. She wrote a gripping, multi-layered thriller while questioning what a parent would do for their child. Filled with duplicity, questionable decisions, and hidden secrets, JUST ANOTHER MISSING PERSON is not just another domestic thriller. It is a must-read.

None of This Is True by Lisa Jewell
Rating: ☕☕☕☕

NONE OF THIS IS TRUE takes the traditional podcast suspense novel and twists it until the reader doesn’t know which story is true. Jewell effortlessly weaves together a tale of lies, hidden secrets, and murder.

When I sit down with a Lisa Jewell novel, I am never disappointed. The intrigue, duplicity, and carefully crafted layers of the mystery unfolding are all consuming and downright bingeable. From the first encounter with Josie and Alix, the reader gets a sense of unease. Then, as the characters reveal themselves, their actions allow opinions to form. But is anything ever what it seems? This is especially the case with Josie. She captivated me just as much as she baffled me. I am not ashamed to admit I went down the rabbit hole with Alix as she gave her story for the podcast. Then she is gone, and everything is turned upside down.

NONE OF THIS IS TRUE was a fast-paced, wonderfully juicy, and darkly twisted read. The characters jump off the page as they navigate through a complicated situation only made more so by lies and murder. Lisa Jewell really delivered on this one. I cannot wait to read what she gives us next.

A Lullaby for Witches by Hester Fox
Rating: ☕☕☕☕☕

A LULLABY FOR WITCHES is a beautifully atmospheric tale of love, loss, family history, and a thread of magic to link them all. Hester Fox never disappoints as she weaves together the history of a location, the complexities of her characters’ lives, and a hint of something otherworldly.

When I open a book by Fox, I know it will be something special. This story was no different. The time spent within Augusta’s world was filled with self-discovery, love, and the quest to find out more about a woman, Margaret Harlowe, who is determined to change her life even from the great beyond. The eloquence of the author’s words moves the narrative forward in a way that both informs the reader and leads them down a path to new discoveries waiting to happen.

A LULLABY FOR WITCHES seamlessly brings together historical elements with the present day while still managing to infuse it all with magic. How the author gives her readers a gothic ghost story mixed with a romance as well as a mystery is the reason why this book is so good. I cannot wait to read Fox’s next book.

Herc by Phoenicia Rogerson
Rating: ☕☕☕☕

HERC is a collection of vignettes told by the various people the famed Hercules encountered throughout his life. Rogerson infuses the classic tales with humor, heart, and a bit of action while still grounding it all in the lore known by so many.

In this fast-paced retelling, the author jumps back and forth between a cast of acquaintances, family members, friends, and lovers as she moves through the life of Hercules. Though I can understand why the author chose to keep the timeline intact, I would have loved to read each character's story from beginning to end. Also, I would have loved to have one moment in the famed hero’s story told by him. However, this is just one reader's opinion, and it didn't take away from the well-developed and beautifully conceived voices throughout the book.

With all that said, I enjoyed this book. There was so much of the mythology I love mixed perfectly with unique perspectives on the great trials and heroic events of Hercules. The behind-the-scenes looks were just as entertaining as I thought they would be.

Confessions of a Forty-Something F**k Up by Alexandra Potter
Rating: ☕☕☕☕

CONFESSIONS OF A FORTY-SOMETHING F**K UP is a witty, candid, and authentically imperfect look at life when things don’t go as planned. Potter delights with a character struggling to figure things out even though she is in her forties.

Honestly, Nell is such a great character. The humor and emotion laced throughout her story allow the reader to feel like they are not alone in not being perfect. It is both refreshing and entertaining to have a glimpse into her life as well as those around her. The author created characters who feel like real people. They all have issues, even though some may have a picture-perfect appearance or carefully curated social media feed. It was wonderful entering Nell’s world as she and her friends navigated the ups and downs of life.

CONFESSIONS OF A FORTY-SOMETHING F**K UP made me laugh out loud as well as have some more pensive moments. This book wholeheartedly encapsulates what many people feel when their lives don’t turn out exactly as they planned when they were in their twenties.

Over the summer I took a break from posting here, but that doesn't mean the adventures stopped. I read so many amazing books in August that I couldn’t not share them with you. These are the books I read last month and my thoughts.

The Invisible Hour by Alice Hoffman
Rating: ☕☕☕☕☕

THE INVISIBLE HOUR is a stunning tale of love, loss, and how magic can take us to a place beyond our wildest dreams. As Hoffman eloquently delves into the life of Mia Jacob, the reader gets to explore the character’s hardships, blessings, and the path she follows to discover who she wants to be.

To say this book was amazing would not do it justice. The characters brought to life within this prose make an impact on the reader. I felt for Ivy as she navigated through a life she chose and thought was the better option. I hated Joel and the toxic energy he seemed to bring into every scene he entered. Reading about Mia’s journey out of the cult life and how she struggled to cope with the damage it had on her being was compelling. The emotions explored within these pages radiate off the page. However, the story that truly hit me was Mia’s journey to Nathaniel Hawthorne. It is nothing short of magical.

THE INVISIBLE HOUR was nothing of what I thought it would be because it was simply better. The writing was beautiful and effortlessly propelled it forward. Hoffman continues to blend real life with the spellbinding idea that something otherworldly can take us to places we only think about in our dreams.

Bright Young Women by Jessica Knoll
Rating: ☕☕☕☕

BRIGHT YOUNG WOMEN is a compulsively addictive story bringing the women impacted by a serial killer to the forefront. Knoll carefully crafts a bold, candid, and affecting prose which pulls the reader in and holds on tight until the last page.

I have read serial killer novels before, but none resonated as strongly as this book did with me. I believe it is primarily how the author expertly shifted the focus of the aftermath of these brutal crimes to the victims instead of the perpetrator. Though there is always this looming threat of The Defendant, Pamela, Ruth, and Tina propel the story forward through their struggles, pain, perseverance, and strength. These bright young women illuminated the page with wit, honesty, and emotion.

There are aspects within the narrative that are difficult to read. However, there has to be. This is not a tale where you can shy away from the grit and darkness in the killer’s soul. Knoll knows how to balance out the horror of what happened and the misogyny women have to deal with moments of healing and resoluteness. She captures the essence of being a woman working through tragedy perfectly.

From beginning to end, I was all in on this story. It grabbed a hold of me, threw me around a bit, and ended in the exact way I wanted it to. BRIGHT YOUNG WOMEN is quite the book. I cannot wait to read what Jessica Knoll gives us next.

The Jasad Heir (The Scorched Throne, Book 1) by Sara Hashem
Rating: ☕☕☕☕☕

THE JASAD HEIR is an utterly addictive read with action, long-hidden secrets, magic, and heart. Hashem effortlessly weaves a compelling tale through well-crafted characters, intricate lore, and carefully developed world-building.

There is something so wonderful about starting a book and instantly being transported somewhere else. Fictional lands, especially in fantasy novels, can be such an escape. And this book was no different. Taking the journey with Sylvia, Arin, Sefa, Marek, and the rest of the cast was filled with fights, duplicitous actions, magic, and tests of character. Each of the characters met has their own unique story to tell. They have just as many flaws as they do good attributes, making this story richer. When all the characters, including the main ones, are good or evil, it leaves no place to go. By developing her characters with truly realistic personalities, the reader will see them grow one way or another.

Then you have the way the author reveals each element of the story. It is entertaining as well as giving the reader the backstory to all the players on this chess board Sylvia is playing with. And let us not forget that the main focus is to get to a competition of warriors representing the various kingdoms while various factions of Jasadi’s coming for Sylvia.

Honestly, I devoured this book. The only thing I can say is a negative aspect is that I don’t have book two. The reader is definitely left wanting more. Where we leave our Nizahl Heir and Jasadi Champion allows for so much to happen next. I cannot wait!

The Sun and the Void (The Warring Gods, Book 1) by Gabriela Romero Lacruz
Rating: ☕☕☕☕

THE SUN AND THE VOID is a compelling and thoroughly all-consuming tale filled with magic, love, pain, and duplicity. Romero-Lacruz masterfully created a lush world with characters embodying the qualities of the best, the worst, and somewhere in between.

From the opening chapter, I felt this book would pull me in. Getting to experience this journey with Reina, Eva, and the rest of the cast was deeply affecting while still entertaining. The way the author infused South American lore and history to build a fictional land with gods, monsters, and various levels of magic was outstanding. She gives us enough background to propel the story forward as the women take center stage. As they learn about themselves, so does the reader.

What I really loved about this book is it is clearly a fantasy. And yet, the real-life issues threaded into an already complex narrative only make it better. Class, race, and learning what one's heart truly loves are all dealt with in these pages with honesty and reverence.

Romero-Lacruz truly wove together a bewitching tale that is just the beginning. I cannot wait for book two to come out.

Godkiller by Hannah Kaner
Rating: ☕☕☕☕

GODKILLER brings together action, lore, and emotion in this epic fantasy. Kaner showcases her talent by breathing life into deeply flawed and beautifully conceived characters while throwing them down a path for answers and to complete a secret quest.

The thing I loved about this particular tale is that it is driven by the characters. They are center stage and it is their engagement with each other as well as the world they live in which propel the narrative forward. Though I would have loved a little more background to the gods and magic, I became instantly invested in Kissen, Eulogist, Inara, and Skedi from the first few chapters. The candor and inner struggles brought to the surface felt real. There was no shying away from tough moments even though there were breaks with witty banter and quirky antics.

This world the author created is vivid and rich with potential to explore in the next book. As a reader, it is my hope that we get to know more about Inara and delve further into the gods still making their presence known and wanting to be worshiped. All in all, Kaner came to play with this entertaining and all-consuming fantasy.

A Most Agreeable Murder by Julia Seales
Rating: ☕☕☕☕

A MOST AGREEABLE MURDER is a charming and wonderfully engaging foray into murder in a small town filled with all the pomp and circumstance a historical reader could want. Seales weaves together a tale with smartly crafted characters, duplicitous behavior, and an investigation into a most inopportune murder.

There are so many reasons to love a well-developed historical mystery. If done well, they transport you back in time and let the reader inhabit a space where propriety and social standing are of the utmost importance until something dastardly occurs. In the case of Seales’ debut, she hits all the high notes while still pushing the boundaries with her unique characters. The Steele family is a gift. From the quirky father to the overbearing mother to the sisters with wildly different personalities, this group comes to life as they interact with the rest of the Swampshire inhabitants and visitors. The dynamic between Beatrice and Drake is delicious with all the banter and witty one-liners.

From beginning to end, A MOST AGREEABLE MURDER was pure historical entertainment with a side of death and foul play. I cannot wait to see what Seales gives us next.

Wildwood Magic by Willa Reece
Rating: ☕☕☕☕

WILDWOOD MAGIC is a bewitching tale of love, pain, and finding your path in life. Reece eloquently brings together the real-life struggles of a woman running away from her past and the magic found in a place she has always meant to be.

As with her previous novel, the author captivates with honest characters, true-to-life situations, and a hint of whimsy. Getting to know Rachel, Mack, Pearl, and the other Wildwood women was a gift. The diversity in the cast was only made better by unique personalities and inherent abilities. Those you meet in these pages have heart, show all the emotions, and don't shy away from who they are. Rachel may not be there in the beginning, but it's her journey to self-discovery that propels the narrative forward. The author showcases the strength of women and how powerful it can be to embrace all of who you are.

I have now loved the time spent within a world created by Willa Reece twice. While reading her books, I am charmed and entertained by a richly developed and beautifully crafted story. However, I am also struck by the importance of her message told through these wonderfully wise women.

THE NIGHTINGALE AFFAIR by Tim Mason
Inspector Charles Field, Book 2

THE NIGHTINGALE AFFAIR is a darkly compelling historical mystery centering around Florence Nightingale and women in the mid-1800s. In this follow-up to the first Inspector Charles Field novel, Mason expertly sets the stage for a murderer who wreaks havoc in Crimea and London.

Within the pages of this book, there is a darkness lurking and hovering just out of reach. This tension and the careful unraveling of the investigation are constructed in a way to pull the reader in as well as have all the moving parts begin to work together for the final reveal. What was particularly effective was the way the author divided the book into parts. Through these divisions, the story can travel back to the original killings surrounding Florence Nightingale and her nurses in Crimea. This background truly shed light on what Inspector Field was dealing with in the current timeline.

From the opening chapters, this reader knew this book was going to show the grit and reality of the time period. The scene and mood were set. However, it was the characters and the insertion of the struggles of women to be taken seriously that made this book so good. All I can say is I hope to hear from Inspector Charles Field again.

WEYWARD by Emilia Hart

WEYWARD is a stunning tale about three women’s journey to self-discovery spanning five centuries. Hart takes her readers in and out of the past as she delves into the lives of Kate, Violet, and Altha. Each combatting personal adversities and being pushed to realize the power they hold within.

To say that I loved this book would be an understatement. The eloquence and masterful storytelling by the author brought the characters to life. There was emotion and realness behind the situations our leading ladies find themselves in that captures the reader. And then you have the hint of magic passed down from generation to generation, which only makes the story that much better.

WEYWARD is a perfect combination of family lore, female fortitude, and historical fiction. From beginning to end, Hart delivered a truly special book.

THE LAST HEIR TO BLACKWOOD LIBRARY by Hester Fox

THE LAST HEIR TO BLACKWOOD LIBRARY is a beautiful gothic tale filled with intrigue, a hint of the supernatural, and a woman at the center struggling to make sense of it all. Fox is truly a master of creating darkly complex stories using the era and environment surrounding the characters to enrich the narrative.

From the beginning to the end, Ivy, Blackwood Abbey, and all the characters pulled me down the rabbit hole right with them. The mystery surrounding the heirs, the setting of post-WWI England with all the societal constructs, and simply the atmosphere of the Abbey give the reader a sense something wicked lays within these pages.

Having read three of Fox’s books previously, I can honestly say this author never disappoints me. The characters are candid and face real emotions. The worlds she creates are rich and though at times dark, always have a glimmer of light peeking through the cracks. THE LAST HEIR TO BLACKWOOD LIBRARY is another book I relished spending reading.

SOMEONE ELSE'S SHOES by JoJo Moyes

SOMEONE ELSE'S SHOES is such a wonderful story centering around two women who couldn’t be more different on the surface. Moyes continues to be able to tap into real emotion while exploring the complexities of relationships, personal evolution, and daily struggles through her characters' eyes.

Entering into Sam and Nisha’s world is a gift given to the reader through eloquently constructed prose and a keen understanding of these brilliantly conceived characters. There is honesty within these pages about the struggles all the characters face which makes the book even more compelling. Then, you have interactions laced with just the right amount of humor, a cast of diverse characters, and a pair of Christian Louboutins to give the story everything you could want.

Here is the thing. When presented with a chance to read any of this author’s books, I will jump at it. Time after time she pulls me in with her characters and fabulously crafted tales. This book is no different. SOMEONE ELSE'S SHOES has wit, heart, self-discovery, and friendship. It is a must-read.

A SPINSTER’S GUIDE TO DANGER AND DUKES by Manda Collins
Ladies Most Scandalous, Book 3

A SPINSTER’S GUIDE TO DANGER AND DUKES is another fabulously fun, perilous, and romantic romp into the world of Ladies Most Scandalous series. Collins brings to life her characters with witty banter, smart deductions, and a hint of danger lurking around the corner.

In this third book, the reader is gifted with the story of Poppy (aka. Flora Deaver) and Joshua, Duke of Langham. These two want to free her sister from a murder conviction while keeping potential matches for the Duke at bay. However, it becomes clear there are much more double dealings, murders, and secrets involved with this investigation.

Honestly, this book is just as enjoyable as the others. The mystery is layered, and the pace propels the narrative forward at just the right speed. Then there is Poppy. Like Caro and Katherine before her, is a strong female with the desire to protect the ones she loves and never back down just because society expects her to.

A SPINSTER’S GUIDE TO DANGER AND DUKES is a historical mystery that will entertain from the first chapter until the final scene.

A DEATH IN DENMARK by Amulya Malladi
Gabriel Præst #1

A DEATH IN DENMARK is a unique crime novel centering around an ex-cop as he investigates a murder that is supposedly solved. Malladi brings into this carefully crafted mystery politics, gangsters, race issues, and Nazi history.

Here is the thing. We are dealing with the first book in the Gabriel Præst series, so there is a good deal of setup within the narrative. Characters are being introduced, the landscape is being set, and the backstories are beginning to be told. However, with all this happening, the author still manages to propel Gabriel forward and throw him into one complex and addictive investigation. There is enough action and intrigue to keep the noir crime lover hooked while still threading through a bit of emotion and interpersonal relationships.

Even though Gabriel’s fashion sense can overtake some scenes, I loved diving into a new world set in Denmark filled with grit, hidden secrets, duplicity, and ulterior motives. A DEATH IN DENMARK set the stage, and now I want the second act.

This month was filled with more delicious mysteries, a how-to guide on killing your employer, uniquely magical reads, and one of the most epic mafia sagas I have read in a while. This month marked two five-star reads!

THE GOLDEN SPOON by Jesse Maxwell

THE GOLDEN SPOON brings the reader behind the scenes of a baking championship filled with a variety of characters, a sprinkling of sabotage, and hidden secrets within the walls of a grand estate. Maxwell expertly crafted a plot with just the right amount of twists, turns, and reveals. The way she weaves a tale of murder and duplicity into the high-stress nature of a food competition was downright addictive and thoroughly entertaining.

Throughout this book, the reader is gifted with multiple perspectives of the contestants as well as the primary host, Betsy. At first, I thought it was going to be too much. However, as I started to get into the groove of the story, it kept the pace going and allowed there to be a broader view of what was going on. Each person peeled back a little more of the truth behind this season’s competition. Because of the characters’ personalities and backgrounds, it opened the narrative to even more layers including a MeToo thread that enriched the backstory of one of our contestants. I don’t want to say who because the development of this is truly wonderfully constructed.  

From the minute I heard about this book, I knew I wanted to read it. The concept seems so obvious to me which may have more to do with my obsession with baking championships, Beat Bobby Flay, and Top Chef. So, thank you, Jesse Maxwell. You gave this mystery-loving bookaholic a perfectly irresistible and delightfully delectable whodunit.

LOYALTY by Lisa Scottoline 

There are very few contemporary novels that not only transport me back in time but completely consume my thoughts for the duration of time while I am reading. This is one of those books. LOYALTY is a brilliantly crafted and compelling story set in Italy during the rise of the Mafia in Sicily.

Here is the thing. This book reads like a tale set in contemporary times but is clearly historical fiction. It is infused with details and descriptions of the time-period which make the narrative that much richer. Scottoline’s research is fully evident in every turn our characters take down the street and each situation they are thrust into. 

Many times while reading, I was getting vibes of Mario Puzo’s flashbacks in THE GODFATHER mixes with Alexandre Dumas’ COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO. There is this level of exemplary storytelling and carefully contracted character development. The haunting actions were taken by those within these pages, the consequences of those actions years later, and the overall emotion is made just that much better by the vibrant landscape of Italy during this time. 

LOYALTY is a powerfully evocative tale of family, love, and deceit. It will sweep you up into an epically gripping world with enough action to keep your pulse pounding only to be balanced by the moments of tenderness and heart. What a read!

SLEEP NO MORE by Jayne Ann Krentz

SLEEP NO MORE is the first in The Lost Night Files series. Krentz opens her reader to a world with mysteries, heightened psychic abilities, and a nefarious plan yet to be fully uncovered.

Though the book does spend time setting up the players and backstories, the story is packed with action, layers of deceit, and even a hint of romance. Add into the mix the psychic elements with Ambrose's and Pallas' gifts it makes the overall plot more intriguing. The pace is fast-moving as the reader is thrown into perilous situation after another with our two leading amateur investigators.

In this edge-of-your-seat read, there are carefully constructed reveals giving the reader some information, but leaving enough open for future books. There is no true resolution by the end, but it was one crazy (in a good way) ride to take. I cannot wait to find out what happens next.

MURDER YOUR EMPLOYER: THE McMASTERS GUIDE TO HOMICIDE by Rupert Holmes

In MURDER YOUR EMPLOYER, the reader learns The McMaster’s Way to properly murder your employer or anyone for that matter. Holmes brilliantly composed a how-to manual of sorts without making it rigid or too instructional by infusing it with stories of three characters on their path to the deletion of their bosses.

What is so entertaining about this book is that there are equal parts action, genuine emotion, and humor. The author managed to explore a world built with fascinating characters, a secret school with just as much mystery in its walls as scholarly knowledge, and compellingly dark reasons to want to commit murder. Holmes succeeded in making the study of deletion (aka murder) interesting and at times, amusing.

Reading about Cliff, Gemma, and Dulcie made this reader realize why a school like McMasters could exist. Their journey to discovering not only how to murder effectively but who they wanted to be past the actions they felt compelled to take was captivating. I was addicted from page one…though I am not sure what that says about me.

All in all, from the way the narrative was told to the glimpses into our three would-be master deletionists perspectives to how McMasters prepares their students for their thesis, this was one unique and well-crafted book.

THE MINUSCULE MANSION OF MYRA MALONE by Audrey Burges

I don’t know what I expected when I entered the world of Burges’ novel, but what I got was a beautiful story about family, love, isolation, and the refuge we all need in our lives. THE MINUSCULE MANSION OF MYRA MALONE explores the relationships that can be forged by letting people into your world and sharing a small part of yourself, even on a blog.

There is a timeless lyrical nature to this book weaving together the past and the present effortlessly. And though there is a budding romance between Myra and Alex, the history and strange links between the mini-mansion and the real location are the catalyst for a truly heartwarming narrative.

There is something so special about having this tale grounded in mystical lore and a tradition of maintaining the mansion for those who need it. Through her eloquence, Burges delves into the core of who her characters are and allows them to develop beyond the confines of the situations they are put in.

THE MINUSCULE MANSION OF MYRA MALONE is a wonderfully charming novel with just the right amount of magic, emotion, and humor.

THE LAST TALE OF THE FLOWER BRIDE by Roshani Chokshi

THE LAST TALE OF THE FLOWER BRIDE is a lush account of how beauty and darkness can feed into each other to create a complex and twisted story of love, friendship, and hidden secrets lurking around every corner. Chokshi masterfully wove together a tale that is both darkly exquisite in its concept as it is in the eloquence of the words.

What is so good about this particular book is the simple fact it is more than just a gothic fantasy. It is a love story between two young girls looking for more than what they have in this realm. It is a story about deep desire between a husband and wife with an impossible vow just waiting to be broken. There is mystery, duplicity, and lore. It pushes the limits of what is real and the perception of what is real.

In many ways, this book is the best type of fairy tale. It has the passion, deceit, and heartbreak of adulthood while still maintaining a whimsy that hints at the otherworldliness of a myth told to us as children. I have long loved Roshani Chokshi’s books. They capture the reader with detailed narratives and glimpses into other lands.

After reading THE LAST TALE OF THE FLOWER BRIDE, it is clear to see that she can still paint a picture both richly emotional and delightfully immersive. Within these pages, her writing transports her readers to a new world grounded in reality but saturated with magic. It captures the tragedy of decisions made and the secrets held deep inside. Once you enter into this world, be careful not to get pulled in too deep. The house may like you enough never to let you leave.

Full disclosure. I really don’t read Young Adult books anymore. However, having started this series in early 2021, I couldn’t give up on my young witches. And even though this is targeted at teens, there was still enough fantasy, lore, and suspense to keep me coming back until the end. Not to mention the writing. This mother-daughter duo can certainly weave an entertaining tale.

SPELLS TROUBLE, Book 1

In this first book in the Sisters of Salem series, the Cast mother-daughter writing duo is back giving their readers what they have come to love about their storytelling. SPELLS TROUBLE is filled with family lore, ancient mythological monsters, gates to other realms, and tons of witchy goodness.

While reading this book, I noticed that there was a decent amount of setup. Like many first books in a series, characters need to be introduced, worlds need to be developed, and the scene needs to be set. SPELLS TROUBLE does a good job of this. The authors have created Goodeville as the backdrop to explore the coming of age of Hunter and Mercy. The way they explain how the magic works and the way each of the girls interacts with their gifts makes the reading experience richer. There is nothing worse than reading a book about witchcraft and not being given the background to where it all began. Though there are many questions still unanswered, the core of the Goode women’s powers history is well explained.

Here is the thing. There is an ending to this book that made me scream because I couldn’t believe I now have to wait for book two to see what happens. Though one aspect of the tale gets sort of wrapped up, there are still loose ends. Hunter and Mercy are not the people they were when we first met them. Goodeville isn’t the same place we were first introduced to in the beginning pages. There is so much upheaval, loss, and consequences to actions taken throughout the novel that I cannot wait to read book two. All the pieces are set, the potions are prepared, and I am anxious to see how it all shakes out.

OMENS BITE, Book 2

OMENS BITE returns with our young twin witches, Mercy and Hunter, exactly where we left them. The loss, emotions, and repercussions of the previous events surrounding their mother’s death as well as the decaying of the Gates is the catalyst for questionable magical choices and heightened reactions. Teenagers can be rash and sensitive in normal circumstances, but the authors push our characters to the limit as they journey down separate paths. 

What is so wonderful about this series is how the authors build the world centered around the Goode witches. There is history, lore, and otherworldly elements. All of which are explored within the prose enhance the tale. As they learn, so does the reader. This gradual development of how things interconnect is compelling and positively enjoyable. And let us not forget the bonuses of having the mythology of the Egyptian Underworld brought into the mix, murderous monsters, certain Goodeville citizens looking to take action against our young witches, and the hate growing in Goodeville. It is great how much this sequel is giving us all the intrigue, magic, and darkness a fantasy lover could want.

All in all, experiencing how Hunter’s choices push her to the breaking point while Mercy’s leave her in peril pushes the reader further down the rabbit hole of Goodeville’s complicated past and present. We are one step closer to finding out how this will all end and I for one am excited to get the next book. 

HEX YOU, Book 3

Having entered the Sisters of Salem’s world thrice, I can tell you that from beginning to end, the time spent with Mercy, Hunter, Xena, and the rest of the crew was well worth it. The authors have captured the essence of being a teenager while interjecting magic and lore in an entertaining way. 

I will be honest with anyone picking up this book. You have to have read the two previous novels. The series is one intricate and carefully constructed tale, building the tension and storyline until the very end. Where Mercy and Hunter start, they are in completely different places by the completion of HEX YOU. The transformation our young witches experience is truly what makes the series so good. And then, you add on top of that the magical elements and mythology woven throughout to create one spellbinding and addictive read. 

HEX YOU is the final chapter of a darkly enchanting YA series. The authors gifted readers with a full arc for all the characters within these pages. The emotion is heightened and there were shocking moments I still am coming to grips with. But where the series ends will leave fans satisfied.

If you are an audiobook listener, this series is wonderful. Cassandra Campbell narrates all three books, so there is a fabulous continuity to the story. She brought to life these characters and beautifully performed the tale the authors put out there.

I know that February is generally the month for love because of Valentine’s Day, but you are not going to see any true romances this month from me. Not because I don’t read them, but because the five books I chose this month were too good to pass up. And for all of you romantics, there are some couplings within these pages.

The Faraway World: Stories by Patricia Engel

THE FARAWAY WORLD is a beautifully honest and empathetic depiction of life through the eyes of the people the reader encounters within these ten stories. Engel has the remarkable ability to give a voice to the full scope of the human condition.

What I loved the most about this collection of short stories is the common thread of candidness to the reality the characters experience. There is complexity, grit, and emotion wrapped up in short narratives. As the reader, there were moments I wished a story could go on longer or developed more. This is especially true with Aida, to find out what truly happened, and Libélula, to really experience more of the relationship between the women. However, on the flip side, I did enjoy the brevity of the glimpses into these characters' lives. After all, it is why one would read a short story collection. 

Engel’s writing is not only eloquent but impactful as well. There is a truth within these pages that shows the reader an experience they may not know. The time spent with THE FARAWAY WORLD was well worth it. I cannot wait for what the author has for us next.

Hex You: Sisters of Salem by P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast

Code 6 by James Grippando

CODE 6 is an intricately created technothriller that forces the reader to question how much of our information gets into the hands of governments and companies. Grippando was extremely skillful at building the layers of the story to add the tension and heightened suspense needed to propel the events forward.

What I liked the most about this crime novel is the characters. There is a human element front and center. If not present, it would have made this book far less compelling. The way the author uses Kate and Patrick’s reactions, as well as their emotions, adds value to the narrative. However, it is not just these two that ground the story in a very real place. All those present throughout these pages add to the moments of peril, action, and at times, a brief levity.

Of course, the central theme is technology and data sharing. Grippando does a good job of not making it too detailed or overly techy. The reader is able to grasp the problems at hand without having to have a scientific background or know too much about the technology behind the programs. It is approachable and yet, still informs the reader about the history behind compiling information and its effects on society today.

All in all, this CODE 6 does not hit you over the head with high action but it does pull you down the rabbit hole with Kate in a way that is addictive.

Varina Palladino's Jersey Italian Love Story by Terri-Lynne Defino

ARINA PALLADINO’S JERSEY ITALIAN LOVE STORY is fun, at times crazy, and heartfelt. DeFino delightfully portrayed a multigenerational Italian experience with all the complexities and emotions a family can bring out.

The Palladino clan jumps off the page with their over-the-top personalities and intense family bond. Though sometimes, the people and the conversations seem a little bit like a caricature, there was enough depth to Varina, Sylvia, Donatella Dante, Tommy, and Paulie to ground the story. The interactions between everyone added a realness needed in a narrative like this. What I enjoyed, besides the definitions at the beginning of each chapter, was the fact it wasn’t a romance in the traditional sense. It is a tale about love, but it is more about learning to love oneself and how that transfer to the relationships around you. It is about family devotion and sharing a life with those who mean the most to you while being willing to take a chance here and there.

Within these pages, I encountered a positively entertaining read. Being from New Jersey and half Italian, some of the phrases, all of the food, and a few of the characters could have been present around my dinner table or at our holiday gatherings in my house over the years. The book was a love story of a culture and a sub-culture. Because let’s be honest. Jersey Italian can sometimes be a whole different level of Italian. You know what I'm saying?

Just the Nicest Couple by Mary Kubica

UST THE NICEST COUPLE is a fast-paced domestic thriller with twists, turns, and deceptions. Kubica continues to write wonderfully addictive reads that will have the reader second-guessing everyone’s motives.

Oh, how juicy this book was! It pushes the perceptions of how a person is seen. What is real? The carefully crafted image presented to the world sees or what lurks under the surface? Then, as each layer is pulled back to reveal the truth, the relationships of the characters begin to change. There is always a moment when reading Kubica's books when I wonder in anything presented at the start of the book is real. It is one of the best parts about reading one of her stories.

The author masterfully creates a tale of duplicity filled with tension. Even if you can see under the surface and read between the lines to figure out its conclusion, JUST THE NICEST COUPLE is a book that will take you on a ride well worth it.
